On Writing, On Ruler, On David Bowie (R.I.P.)

I should have been editing this weekend, but I wrote instead – almost a chapter and a half. It’s the most I’ve written in such quick succession since the birth of Tiny Human. And it was amazing. Just like the old days of boundless inspiration, when scenes demanded their release onto the page and nothing but the tap of my fingers on the keys would soothe their howl. These new words are going to drastically change the series and its ultimate direction, but I feel good about them – better than good about them, in fact.

Of course, it’s no secret that every book I write has a soundtrack, every chapter a song. It helps keep me on track, focused on the scene at hand and emotionally connected to it. I worked on two chapters this weekend (piling up a whopping 3458 new words) and this was the soundtrack song for the second of those chapters. When I closed my Word document this morning and clicked open Facebook, it damn near broke my heart.

R.I.P. David Bowie. Thank you for all the inspiration, all the music, and for just plain being one of my heroes all these years (from you, I learned survival through continuous artistic reinvention, and that was a brilliant lesson indeed).
